Minnow In The Studio

Minnow's been in the studio working on their new EP, and it sounds amazing so far. Think Zeus throwing lightning bolts at rainbows and the explosion that would result from that.

Ghosts by Nili Barton

this     ghost          in         the            corner          of      my         room        does       nothing       but     the        laundry

there the same damn load in
the same tin bucket banging
            against
the same damn washboard
splintered so horribly
it's hard to imagine
the weakened tattered
        rags don't rip its
hands trudging through

    shirts through pants
                 through ties through
                  bras through briefs
  through soaps extracted
    out of
  a peculiar world rising
  from the bucket
           scents fluctuating
            with the temperature
    separating articles of

    clothing is thrown
    anywhere it'll fit

        waking up tomorrow morning
with a sock in my mouth
                      she says this feels like
          sledding without the sled

a depleted membrane          of
    viscous wives
            and
        cancerous husbands
making
  pinkishly jovial
    public appearances shaped
by

       back-room curiosities                                     and                                             how-to-books

  artfully scattered
                across the floor

This is How N.B. Writes

Nili Barton works at an elementary school in Seattle, Washington. He started an after school creative writing club that is about to begin its second six-week session. At this point, Mr. Barton has twelve creative writing exercises that probably went over the heads of his fourth graders, but are perfect for you. Thus, he decided to compile and release the instructional chapbook, 12 Creative Writing Exercises That Probably Went Over The Heads Of My Fourth Graders But Are Perfect For You Volume 1. 12CWETPWOTHOMFGBAPFY is slated for release at the end of May.

Here's a bit of what can be found in the book...

Week 2: Every Idea Starts With a Word
The philosopher Thomas Hobbes once said, “We cannot think about things, but only about the names of things.” What he meant is that we can’t even begin to think about something unless we have the words or names to explain that thing. We can’t think about a tree unless we all have a similar understanding of what a tree is, so the idea of the tree starts with the word tree. This might seem a little confusing, but what I’m trying to suggest is that words are building blocks for larger ideas, much like molecules are the building blocks for our bones, blood, brain, body and so forth. Without words, without molecules, there can be no ideas and no body.
For this prompt I want you to open a dictionary and randomly select a word. Then use that word in a sentence. Open to a different page, randomly select a different word, and use that word in another sentence. After a couple sentences you will probably notice that you’re starting to form an idea. Either an idea for a story, or a poem, or just a new set of thoughts that never would have occurred to you if you didn’t start with those random words in the dictionary. Despite the fact that you’re picking words at random, the sentences you create probably won’t be as random. Your brain will start to create logical relationships from one sentence to the next. Continue picking out words and writing sentences until you feel as though you’ve generated a good idea. Then just roll with it. If you get stuck, open the dictionary back up and start again.

The Birth of Sans Gravity

Let's face it, there's a fucking feast of art out there that wants to be consumed. Slow roasted photography dripping with a ukelele glaze. Painting au gratin and a steamy side of poached poetry. A million tables over, stacked to the ceiling, towers of well-done dish's contents are crusting over the plates and bowls that were served. Everyone eats at this table. Everyone serves at this table. It's the democratization of both publishing and publicity. It's social networking. It's all of that art quite actively, quite shamelessly, asking you to consume it.

It's quite vehemently demanding your attention,
or positioning itself at your feet and just laying there.
Leaving smudges of its hair, its skin, its heart, on your shoes.
And you just walk away.

And you keep walking.
Until at some point, something strikes you.
Some name or image or story or song.
How do you decide;

What to listen to?
What to watch?
What to read?
What to look at?

How do you decide what to devour, and what to feed to the dogs?

Is it a certain aesthetic quality?
A certain subject matter?
Maybe it was the time,
or maybe it was the place,
that you were introduced?

Whatever it was it happened.
And it will continue to happen.
You will continue to stumble down certain streets,
taking detours now and again,
in your pursuit of artistic viability.

You will pass through a dense city,
topographically heavy,
swarming with merchants and street performers.

This city will grow around you
and there will never be enough
hours in your day to consume it all.

There's a group of friends in Los Angeles
  They're in a band
They have some friends in the Bay Area
one of them is a photographer
the other is a graphic designer
They created the art for the band's first EP

This band from LA
and the graphic designer
and photographer from
the Bay Area have
a friend in Seattle
who writes poetry

one time
the poet from Seattle
opened
for the band from LA
with
a poetry reading

It was a memorial show for their friend
who had passed away
and the graphic designer
and the photographer
were there they had both
created posters for the event and
the posters were hanging on a wall
with other works of art

There     were       other       bands         too         and         a        lot       of   other   friends

  This story is
      just one of the ways
              in which Sans Gravity
    was brought together
        &
        it mentions only
        a handful of the
    people involved the
                                           rest is better told
through the art that has
        &
          will continue to come
    from it

    THIS
      IS
